Fabulous Antique Blue and White Hot Chocolate Pot By George Jones & Sons in the Abbey Pattern, Circa 1901-1921, Capacity 1 Pint, Lid is Missing
For sale hers is a lovely deep blue/flow blue Hot Chocolate Pot with integrated spout, manufactured by George Jones & Sons between 1901-1921 in the lovely Abbey Pattern.
George Jones was a pottery manufacturer in England between 1856-1957. In 1856 George Jones opened a pottery workshop in Glebe Street, Stoke on Trent. Around 1865 he built the Trent Potteries, next to the Newcastle-under-Lyme canal and then in 1873, the company was renamed George Jones & Sons. George died in 1893 but the business continued and in 1907, it was renamed Crescent Potteries. They ceased trading in 1957.
The pattern is known as "Abbey" and the central image is of the ruins of an Abbey or Church and this is repeated around the border in a cartouche with rococo style scrolls, scrolling curves and acanthus leaves It was a very popular pattern that first appeared in 1840 when it was known as Abbey Wreath. The original manufacturer was William Adams and George Jones bought many of his patterns, including this, in 1861. JONES reissued the pattern when the interest for earlier china patterns was at its height.
This lovely Lidded Hot Chocolate Pot stands 5.5 inches/13.5 cm tall, and measures 5 inches/12.5 cm from spout to handle. The capacity is 1 pint.
The pot is in fair Antique condition, considering the piece is over 100 years old, with no cracks or crazing. There are a couple of chips and areas of discolouration on the rim as photographed and there is a small manufacturing flaw on the rim, in the form of a burst pin prick air bubble as photographed. Both flaws could probably be covered up/restored but I have never done anything to camouflage these issues, as they part of the personality of the vessel.
The Lid is unfortunately missing. Makes a great jug, though, without the lid, and it’s also great as a flower vase.
I also have a Lidded Hot Water Pot in the same pattern, and this will be for sale shortly, see the second last photo.
I’ll have a few more Blue and White and Willow Pattern items coming up shortly, so keep an eye out if you are building a collection. See the last photo, for some the other items I’ll have for sale soon.
