The "Robert Ludwig Hot Mix" (more accurately called the RL hot cut) refers to the legendary original 1969 US vinyl pressing of Led Zeppelin II. It is widely considered by audiophiles to be the definitive and best-sounding version of the album.

Mastering engineer Robert Ludwig was handed the master tapes and cut the record with an incredible, unrestricted dynamic range and massive bass response. The sound was exceptionally loud, punchy, and vibrant. However, the mix was too powerful.

When played on cheap, low-grade turntables common in the late 1960s, the intense low-end frequencies caused the phonograph needles to literally jump right out of the vinyl grooves.

Fearing a wave of product returns from angry teenagers with cheap hardware, Atlantic immediately halted production and withdrew the pressing.

Atlantic hired a different engineer to completely recut the album with attenuated bass and heavily compressed dynamics. This quieter, "flat mix" became the standard version sold to the public for decades, while Ludwig's master tape cut vanished from production lines.
