Released in 1993, Juno Reactor’s Transmissions is one of the foundational albums of the early Goa trance sound, capturing the genre at a point when its identity was still being formed. Ben Watkins fused acid, techno, industrial electronics and psychedelic atmospheres into something darker, heavier and more cinematic than much of the dance music of the period, with tracks such as “High Energy Protons” and “Laughing Gas” becoming enduring Goa classics. Its significance to the Goa scene lies not simply in its influence on later psytrance, but in the way it embodied the scene’s sense of experimentation, science fiction and psychedelic escapism - music designed to feel like a journey rather than simply a collection of club tracks. Watkins himself described the emerging culture less as “hippie” music and more as a “sci-fi scene for acid party people,” reflecting the futuristic, outsider spirit that Transmissions helped define.
