It could be anything mechanical, but usually if the tapes is unstable and stops or ff or rw is also stopping it’s a belt that’s become loose/ stretched or if no movement at all snapped. I suggest open the bottom of the player and you may find the pulleys with the belt attached it rubber. Replace with a strong runner band and it may work again.
I did it with a vhs machine recently
They were out due to age also
