2009 Hungary, Austria & Germany 20 years of border opening between Hungary and Austria Commemorative Stamps Combined First Day Cover (FDC)

The opening of the Hungarian-Austrian border was a decisive impetus for the revolutionary events in the GDR in the autumn of 1989. This border was part of the Iron Curtain, the systemic border that had divided Europe since the Second World War. When Hungary began dismantling its border fortifications on May 2, 1989, many GDR citizens hoped to reach the Federal Republic of Germany via Hungary and Austria and sought refuge in the West German embassy in Budapest. This soon had to be closed due to overcrowding. On September 11, 1989, Hungary opened the border, and within three weeks, 30,000 GDR citizens had reached the Federal Republic of Germany via Austria.
