1975 Jersey Royal Visit Commemorative Stamps Presentation Pack
One of the highlights of the Queen Mother's visit was the naming of the Island's new lifeboat the "Thomas James Kin" Named thereafter the famous Jersey lifeboat coxswain, who in 1949 was awarded the Royal Lifeboat Institutes Gold Medal for conspicuous gallantry, this 44-ft. Waverney class self-righting steel lifeboat (Official No. 44-013) with a maximum speed of around 16 knots is nearly twice as fast as the boat it replaces and was displayed at the London (Earls Court) Boat Show in 1975, which was opened by the present coxswain, Mike Berry, himself a holder of the Sliver Medal for the daring rescue of French sailors off the island in 1973. The £100,0000 needed for the purchase of this modern lifeboat was achieved by local subscription in Jersey, where also the Ladies' Lifeboat Guild in 1974 raised £10,283 for RNLI funds.
