Yamaha HS50M vs. HS5: A Retro Review from a Modern Mixer’s Perspective
When I first compared the Yamaha HS50M with its successor, the HS5, I was struck by how much nostalgia carried over in the HS50M’s sound. The older model retains a soulful warmth and a punchy midrange that feels almost like a comfort blanket when you mix. In contrast, the HS5 feels clinical, which some may call “modern,” but I sense it sometimes lacks personality.
One thing I consistently noticed was the sturdier build of the HS50M; its heft and classic boxy design add to its vintage charm. When placed side-by-side, the HS5’s sleek contours and lighter body reflect Yamaha’s push toward a more contemporary studio aesthetic.
