W.M.F. William Egan & Sons, 1896 Queenstown Regatta, Spectacular Silver Plate Lidded Trophy
AN EXCEPTIONAL LATE 19TH CENTURY GERMAN SILVER-PLATE LIDDED TROPHY CUP, with Makers mark W.M.F. for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik AG - Geislingen, Germany. Purchased by Renowned Irish Silversmith Messrs Egan & Sons from W.M.F to present at the Queenstown Regatta. A masterpiece, 50 cm's tall and weighing a heavy 2950 grams, nearly 3 kg's.
Highly decorated throughout in the Historismus manner, the piece features a removable domed cover with figural finial and masks in relief. The body features a central oval cartouche engraved with presentation inscription for the Queenstown (Cobh) Regatta 15th August 1896, Presented by Messrs Egan & Sons. The cartouche is surrounded by embossed and chased foliate scrolls, flanked by figures in traditional dress with musical instruments. Raised on gilt knopped support on circular foot with conforming decorative borders. Dimensions: 49cm high approx. In good condition as photographed, the cover rim being slightly misshapen but the lid fits securely.
