Vintage Benin Bronze Sculpture 44 cm Tall

The statue's height commands attention, while its slender form prevents it from overwhelming any surrounding décor.
In great condition and very sturdy in situ.
Sculptures depicting figures who are long and thin their significance and origin is not clear but it may be linked to a depiction of a figure who is a rain bringer. Alberto Giacometti the Swiss artist copied these figures and put his own spin on their meaning which for him signified something obscure about war, isolation from reality and violence.  The African depiction is original to the artists and the figures are usually old persons who were and still are held in very high esteem.

Interesting fact: Benin bronze objects, were used in West Africa as a form of currency and thus status. Their value lies in both the metal used and the ornamentation created on the sculpture. Benin sculptures are made using the lost-wax method of casting. This means only one unique items can be made from each wax model. The wax model is carefully covered in clay. This is then heated to set the clay and melt the wax. Molten metal is then poured into the clay mould. Once it cools the clay is chipped away, leaving the bronze sculpture.
