The Irish designs depicted are the typical interwoven zoomorphic figures associated with Celtic manuscripts containing medieval illustrations of natural life.
As in Islamic art where reproduction of human and animal forms is forbidden , there was a tendency in Celtic art of employ highly stylished recipena uns of natural forms and animals which sometimes make the original c a dif cult to identory.
Fish. birds. reptiles have all frequently appeared as early ruligious symbols but invanably these were in intricate stylised art for and it is in these forms that they occur in the Book of Kells and other ancient documents.
