For sale is a rare sterling silver spoon with an enamelled shield on top showing an image of the new ISCON iron & steel works at Durgapur, West Bengal. I believe this spoon was made to commemorate the opening up of the new works at Durgapur in 1956. This spoon is in excellent condition overall and its deep-bue vitreous enamel is in excellent condition too, with no damage or scratches.

The Durgapur Steel Company was set up in 1956 as a joint ISCON (Indian Steelworks Construction Company Ltd) and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) joint venture and production of ingot steel started there in 1962. The iron & steel plant was modernised during the early 1990’s and remains one of India’s main steel producers. The Durgapur works became best known for its production of solid cast and forged steel wheels and axels, mainly those used for railway locomotives and rolling-stock.

ISCON (Indian Steel Construction Company Ltd) was a consortium of British steel producers who collaborated with SAIL to build the new iron & steel plant at Durgapur in West Bengal.
