Antique Chinese Pewter Drinking Cup
An antique Chinese goblet (cup) made of tin and coconut shell, most often from the Qing Dynasty (19th or early 20th century).
The exterior of the cup is made of natural, polished coconut shell. The interior, rim, and stem (foot) are made of tin.
The shell's surface features precise, delicately carved, and colored plant motifs (including orchids and grasses), characteristic of Chinese artistic craftsmanship.
In ancient China, vessels combining coconut and tin (or silver) were very popular. It was believed, among other things, that the natural coconut shell and metal insert could react with poison and thus warn of danger.
