Amazing Vintage and Rare Solid Bronze or Copper Museum Quality Replica of a Greek Lekythos Vessel with a Lovely Patina of Verdigris Oxidisation
Following my house move, I have further items to list as I continue to downsize my life!
I have actually moved onto some boxes that were packed before my previous house move 14 years ago, and were never unpacked in all that time!!!!!
Next up is an Amazing Vintage and Rare Solid Bronze/Copper Museum Quality Replica of a Greek Lekythos Vessel with a Lovely Patina of Verdigris Oxidisation
When I bought this fabulous vessel many years ago, I had no idea what it was or what material it was made from. I actually presumed that it was ceramic, and it was only when I cleaned it up a bit that I realised that it must be metal, and most likely solid Bronze or solid Copper. Having been back in storage for 14 years it now has a stunning layer of Verdigris oxidisation in tact, that I have only lightly polished in a couple of areas, to show the original colour underneath.
I also didn’t know the purpose of the vessel, as the example that I have, has a small circular hole in the bottom, so it cannot hold anything. But having completed some online research, it appears to be a museum quality replica of what is know as a Greek Lekythos Vessel
A Greek lekythos is a distinctive type of ancient Greek Pottery or Bronze vessel, characterized by its slender, elongated body, narrow neck, and single handle connecting the shoulder to the neck. Primarily used for storing and pouring oil, these vessels played a significant role in both daily life and funerary rituals, particularly in ancient Athens.
I have no idea of the provenance or age of this impressive piece, but it just spoke to me all those years ago. It still brings me joy, but downsizing is a must! But I will not be accepting any low-ball offers on this piece.
It stands 12 inches/30cm tall and is roughly 3.5 inches/ 8.5cm in diameter at the widest point. It is well cast, and with a fabulous patina.
It is a very heavy piece, but I forgot to take a photo of the weight. I’ll do that tomorrow and add the details.
The only similar bronze replica that I can find online is listed at over €750, so not only rare but also expensive. See the last couple of photos.
