RARE 19th Century Irish Copper Pub Measure – 1835 – County Meath - open to offers

Genuine antique Irish copper tavern measure dating to 1835, made in the traditional “Haystack” style.

A really unusual piece with an incredible history. It carries1835 IRISH COPPER PUB MEASURE – KING WILLIAM IV – COUNTY MEATH a series of old official verification stamps showing that it remained in commercial use for around 100 years.

HISTORY & MARKINGS:

• 1835 – stamped with the crown and WR IV (King William IV)

• Later VR / Victorian verification stamp

• Inspector's mark 511, associated with County Meath

• Further verification dates 1925 and 1935, meaning this same measure was still being officially checked and used a century after it was made

• Crescent-shaped inspector's touchmark to the old solder repair

The construction is particularly interesting, with a hand-made copper body and dovetailed/cramped base, typical of early 19th-century copperware.

It also has an old solder repair to the handle which appears to have been inspected and stamped.

CONDITION:

Very good original antique condition for its age. Beautiful dark aged patina with some verdigris and honest dents from use.

Never polished, so the original aged finish has been left untouched.

SIZE:

Approx. 23cm tall x 11.5cm diameter at the base.

A genuinely interesting piece of Irish pub and weights & measures history, particularly with the combination of the 1835 William IV mark, County Meath inspector mark and later 1925/1935 verification stamps.
