"Barry House", 6, 7 & 8 Fleet Street, Dublin - Edwardian Stained Glass Panel

An original leaded stained-glass architectural transom panel from Barry House, 6, 7 & 8 Fleet Street, Dublin.

The panel features hand-painted lettering reading:
"BARRY HOUSE"
"6, 7, 8 FLEET STREET"
with a central heraldic shield in coloured stained glass. It remains in its original timber frame.

No. 8 Fleet Street is well known as the birthplace of Irish patriot Kevin Barry in 1902, when his family lived above Thomas Barry's dairy business.

In late 19th- and early 20th-century Dublin, it was quite common for businesses and better-quality houses to have a stained or leaded glass fanlight (over the door) or a glazed transom with the house or business name incorporated into the glass. Hotels, dairies, public houses, and shops often displayed their name this way, sometimes with the street number as well. Many examples still survive around Dublin.


Provenance

After renting commercial premises in Temple Bar for approximately 15 years, when my tenancy ended, the landlord advised that this stained-glass panel had been left in the building and had no interest in retaining it. It has remained in my possession ever since.
