@gerwaldr: hi I just asked my sister to have a look at it for you unfortunately it doesn't have it and even the manual states this function is available on some machines. Just not this one. Sorry about that regards Mary

Thanks, usually in the brother machine there is a button on the cover just over the stitch length buttons with three speeds, 1,2,3 and this determines how fast or slow the machine goes but the foot still determines the stop start and controls within those speeds. The advantage is that for a learner..like my niece ... She can't go fast one level 1 and this makes it very relaxing to learn...sorry but long winded but incase you're interested. I buy the brother usually for a gift for a child who is trying to learn specifically for the speeds controls. Thanks
