Strate Gate -Noise gate & Expander
Strate Gate by Valley People.
a vintage dual-channel noise gate and expander manufactured by Valley People (formerly Valley International).
In the world of professional audio engineering, these are legendary for being incredibly fast and precise. They are a staple in recording studios, particularly for shaping drum sounds.
What it actually does
A noise gate acts like a security guard for your audio signal. It stays "closed" (silent) until the audio reaches a certain volume (the Threshold), at which point it snaps open to let the sound through.
The Strate Gate is famous because it uses a proprietary VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) that allows it to open and close without the "clicks" or "pops" that plague cheaper gates.
Key Features on Your Unit:
Dual Channel: You have two identical sets of controls, allowing you to process two mono signals (like a kick and a snare) or a single stereo pair.
Key (Int/Ext): This allows you to "trigger" the gate using an external sound source. For example, you can make a bass synth "pump" every time the kick drum hits.
Duck Mode: Instead of silencing quiet sounds, this lowers the volume of the main signal whenever a secondary signal is present (common for voice-overs over background music).
Frequency-Conscious Gating: The LF/HF Response knobs allow you to tell the gate to only listen to specific frequencies. This prevents a loud cymbal crash from accidentally "opening" the gate on your kick drum mic.
Current Value
These units are quite sought after by collectors and engineers who prefer analog outboard gear.
Because Valley People gear is no longer in production and has a "cult classic" status for its unique sound, making these very Collectible and highly Valued.
