Handmade ceramic set by Michael Kennedy - Sligo Pottery, Ireland
An exceptional complete drinks service by one of the most important Irish studio potters of the 20th and 21st centuries – Michael Kennedy Sligo .The set comprises a large decorative jug with handle and spout, 8 stemmed goblets/cups, and one bowl. The entire group is covered in a rich, multicoloured glaze in Kennedy’s characteristic tones of deep blue, burgundy, purple and warm golden accents. The surfaces are decorated with incised wave motifs – the artist’s typical “marine” formal language, inspired by the Atlantic coastline of Ireland.
Michael Kennedy (d. 2021) was among Ireland’s leading studio potters. He established his first studio in Sligo in 1979 . At the height of his career he ran two studios and a shop in the centre of Sligo. His work combines functionality with a strong sculptural quality. Kennedy was renowned for masterful throwing, rich layered glazes and textures inspired by the Irish landscape – ocean waves, bogland and wild nature. He produced both functional pottery and more decorative forms. His pieces found their way into homes and collections in Ireland and abroad, and since his death have become increasingly sought after by collectors.Complete, colour- and style-coordinated service sets by Kennedy appear on the market only rarely. This example stands out for its unified, vibrant glaze with lively colour transitions, clear wave incisions, solid craftsmanship (wheel-thrown, unglazed bases with Sligo studio marks) and very good condition. It is an authentic fragment of Irish studio pottery from the late 20th and early 21st century – beautiful, soulful functional ware ideal for both display and everyday use.
