Dicksonia antarctica

A striking, slow-growing evergreen tree fern (semi-evergreen or deciduous in colder climates) that brings a dramatic, prehistoric, tropical look to gardens. It develops a thick, fibrous, reddish-brown to dark trunk-like rhizome (often described as "woolly" or "furry") topped with a graceful rosette of large, arching fronds.

The fronds are glossy dark green, deeply divided (bipinnate to tripinnate), soft-textured, and can reach 2–3 m (6–10 ft) or more in length on mature specimens, creating a wide, elegant canopy. New fronds unfurl from the crown in spring, adding fresh architectural interest.

Mature size in cultivation: Typically 3–6 m (10–20 ft) tall with a spread of 2.5–4 m (8–13 ft), though it grows very slowly and may stay smaller for many years. In ideal mild, humid conditions it can eventually reach taller heights.

Fully hardy in milder Irish and UK gardens (RHS H3–H4 rating), but benefits from shelter in a shaded or partially shaded position. Prefers consistently moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil that never dries out completely. Water the trunk and crown generously in summer; protect the crown with fleece, straw, or old fronds during severe frosts or prolonged cold spells.

Excellent as a specimen plant in woodland gardens, exotic borders, shaded patios, or near water features. It pairs beautifully with hostas, ferns, and other shade lovers for a lush, jungle-like effect.
