Based in Kilmuckridge
Dryopteris wallichiana (Wallich’s Wood Fern) is a striking evergreen or semi-evergreen fern valued for its bold architectural shape and lush, tropical appearance.
It forms a large, upright clump of long, arching dark green fronds, each heavily textured and finely divided. One of its most distinctive features is the dense covering of dark brown to black scales along the stems, which creates a dramatic contrast against the rich green foliage. The fronds can reach up to 90–120 cm long, giving the plant a strong presence in shaded gardens.
This fern thrives in moist, humus-rich soil and prefers partial to full shade, although it can tolerate some morning sun if the soil remains consistently damp. It is ideal for woodland planting schemes, shaded borders, courtyard gardens, or alongside hostas and other foliage plants.
Despite its exotic appearance, it is hardy and relatively easy to grow once established. Old fronds can be removed in late winter or early spring to make way for fresh new growth.
