Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans'
(Plume Japanese Cedar / Plume Cedar)
An elegant, evergreen conifer retaining soft, feathery juvenile foliage throughout its life. Foliage is seafoam-blue-green or soft green in summer, turning rich brownish-red, bronze, or deep burgundy-plum in winter for striking seasonal color.
Forms a broadly columnar to oval or billowy pyramidal shape with tiered, spreading branches; dense and bushy habit. Mature size typically 10–20 ft (3–6 m) tall and 6–10 ft (2–3 m) wide, though older specimens may reach 30 ft with time; slow to moderate growth.
Bark is attractive reddish-brown, peeling in long fibrous strips. Small spherical cones may appear but are often sparse or absent.
Ideal as a specimen plant, accent, or screen where its soft texture and dramatic winter bronzing can be appreciated. Prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and protection from heavy wet snow which can damage branches.
