Clematis montana var. grandiflora
(Montana Clematis / White Anemone Clematis)
A very vigorous, fast-growing deciduous climber famous for its spectacular spring display. In late spring to early summer (May–June), it produces a profusion of large, single, pristine white flowers up to 7 cm (3 inches) across, with four wide, overlapping petals and bright golden-yellow stamens in the centre. The blooms often appear in such abundance that they can almost completely cover the foliage, creating a dazzling “snowstorm” effect. Flowers are mildly fragrant (sometimes with a light vanilla or sweet scent) and may produce occasional repeat blooms later in the season.
Foliage consists of attractive trifoliate, dark green leaves with serrated edges that provide a lush backdrop once flowering finishes. After blooming, it develops fluffy, silvery seedheads that add autumn interest.
Mature size: Typically reaches 8–12 m (25–40 ft) tall and 2.5–4 m (8–13 ft) wide, making it ideal for covering large structures quickly. It is fully hardy and relatively resistant to clematis wilt.
Pruning group 1: Requires little to no pruning — just tidy after flowering if needed. Prefers full sun to partial shade with roots in cool, moist, well-drained soil (ideally rich and organic). Excellent for pergolas, walls, fences, arches, or growing through large trees.
A classic, award-winning Montana clematis (often RHS AGM) prized for its easy-going nature, enormous vigour, and breathtaking early-season floral display. Perfect for creating a dramatic spring feature with minimal maintenance!
