Borinda KR 7613 was collected by British plant hunter Keith Rushforth (collection number KR 7613) at an altitude of 3,200 metres (approx. 10,500 ft) in Caojian, Yunnan Province, China.

A highly sought-after, clump-forming (non-running) evergreen bamboo from the Borinda group, originally collected by Keith Rushforth (KR collection number 7613). It is prized for its striking ornamental culms and excellent cold hardiness.

New culms emerge with a beautiful powdery blue-grey to blue-white waxy coating, creating a dramatic “blue bamboo” effect that stands out in the garden. As they mature, the canes transition to olive-green or yellowish-green. The culms are thick and sturdy, with a smooth to finely ridged texture.

It forms a dense to moderately open clump with arching, fountain-like foliage of narrow, dark green leaves that provide a soft, graceful texture and good year-round screening.

Mature size: Typically reaches 4–7 m (13–23 ft) tall, sometimes more in ideal conditions, with a similar spread if allowed to develop. Growth is reasonably fast once established.

Hardy to approximately -15°C to -20°C (RHS H4–H5), making it one of the tougher Borinda selections and more reliable in cooler climates like Ireland than some other blue-culmed forms. Prefers partial shade to light shade (can take sun if kept moist), in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Protect from strong drying winds.

Low-maintenance and excellent as a specimen plant, tall screen, or architectural feature in exotic, woodland, or modern gardens.

This is a collector’s favourite among bamboos for its stunning young blue culms, elegant habit, and proven hardiness — a fantastic choice for adding height, movement, and winter interest without the risk of it becoming invasive!
