Astilbe (commonly known as False Goat’s Beard)
A popular, clump-forming herbaceous perennial valued for its elegant, feathery flower plumes and attractive foliage. Astilbes produce dense, upright or arching panicles of tiny, star-like flowers in shades of white, cream, pink, red, magenta, or purple, blooming from early to late summer (June–August, depending on variety).
The foliage is deeply divided, fern-like or lace-like, often bronze-tinted when young and turning rich green or reddish-bronze in autumn. Many cultivars have glossy or crinkled leaves that add texture even when not in flower.
Mature size: Most garden varieties grow 45–120 cm (18–48 inches) tall and 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) wide, though dwarf forms exist. They form neat, bushy clumps that slowly expand.
Key features:

Thrives in partial to full shade and loves consistently moist, humus-rich soil — ideal for damp borders, woodland edges, stream banks, or pond margins.
Fully hardy in Ireland (RHS H6–H7).
Excellent for cutting and attracts pollinators.
Many cultivars hold the RHS Award of Garden Merit (e.g., ‘Deutschland’, ‘Fanal’, ‘Rheinland’, ‘Sprite’, ‘Straussenfeder’).

Popular uses: Mass planting for dramatic summer colour in shady spots, mixed perennial borders, or as ground cover in moist areas. They pair beautifully with hostas, ferns, and Rodgersia.
Note: Astilbe goes dormant in winter, with the dried flower plumes often left on for winter interest before cutting back in spring.
A reliable, low-maintenance perennial that brings soft colour and texture to shaded, damp parts of the garden!
