Vintage lithograph Scene at Gougane Barra, Cork

Gougane Barra is a most outstanding and beautiful scenic valley and historical site in the Shehy Mountains of County Cork, Ireland.

An apt description describes how the lush green foliage that dominates the valley during the summer gradually gives way to a rich palette of red, orange, and gold in Autumn. The trees that line the lake shores and the surrounding hillsides burst into a symphony of warm hues, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle. The centerpiece of Gougane Barra is its tranquil lake, which mirrors the changing foliage and adds an extra layer of beauty to the scene. The clear waters of the lake seem even more pristine in the autumn, reflecting the fiery foliage above. The ripples on the surface catch the sunlight, creating a sparkling and mesmerizing effect.

Saint Finbarr, (hence Barra) the patron saint of Cork, built a monastery on an island in Gougane Barra which is home to countless beautiful walkways, incredible scenery, and immense natural beauty, This idyllic piece of Cork is home to a wealth of history waiting to be discovered.

“This hallowed shrine of St. Finbarr dates back to the 6th century where he communed with God. The surrounding mountains were his cloister and the lake was for him the mirror of God’s grandeur, stone cells commemorate his hermitage. From here he journeyed the river-way of the Lee to become the first bishop and founder of the church and city of Cork. He died in 623AD and hist feast day is celebrated on September 25th. “

This is a vintage (70s) framed coloured Lithograph titled "Scene at Gougane Barra" from Ireland. Drawn by W.H. Bartlett and engraved by R. Brandard. This picture shows the small stone cells surrounding a central cross in the monastery where the monks lived which is largely derelict now.

In good condition in a wood frame with glass. Minor wear to the frame from age and use.
