The Secret
When people speak of the Mayo coastline, they usually speak of grey and blue. But living here, I've learned that this place is an endless canvas, and the sea is a master of illusion.
This painting, which I captured near Louisburgh looking out towards Mulranny, is actually a colour explosion. Hidden beneath the dark shadow of the mountains is the deep crimson of the earth, which the setting sun reveals for just a fleeting moment, like a rare treasure. And then there is the water. It isn't just green—it is a thousand greens! The blackness of the depth, the pearlescent cyan of the breaking foam, and the vibrant lime green of the coastal sea moss all merge into one living surface.
The secret is in the transition. I waited for hours for the clouds to align just so, allowing me to catch that exact moment: the collision of dramatic darkness and brilliant light. I painted this when I realized that the same familiar view holds an entirely new soul and color in every passing minute.
This is what I am sharing with you. Not just a seascape, but the honest, rare palette that the Atlantic Ocean only ever shows to the patient observer. When it hangs on your wall, it will be a constant reminder that nature's greatest dramas are often concealed within the subtlest colors.
I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for. / Georgia O'Keeffe
