'The Fall of the Polafuca on the River Liffey' by Paul Sandby

35cm x 29cm

Poulaphouca, officially Pollaphuca, is the name of a waterfall and bridge on the River Liffey between County Wicklow and County Kildare. It is primarily known nowadays for its hydroelectric generating station and the associated artificial lake, known as Poulaphouca Reservoir, Poulaphouca Lake, or Blessington Lakes.

In modern times it has been reduced to a small trickle most of the time. The construction of the Poulaphouca hydroelectric dam and reservoir scheme in the 1930s and 1940s diverted the water flow, changing the once-roaring natural wonder.
