John Gilroy's early concept design for the legendary Guinness advertising poster.
John Gilroy (1898–1985), one of the most important and recognizable artists in the history of advertising. Between 1930 and 1960, he created dozens of iconic posters for Guinness, including series featuring animals (e.g., a toucan) and series promoting strength.
This image is an early conceptual design (sketch) for the legendary Guinness advertising poster.
The graphic depicts a tired rower in a boat, who has broken an oar with the force of his hands. This version represents a unique preparatory stage for the advertising campaign, as evidenced by the note at the bottom of the frame indicating a hand-drawn sketch prepared for the final poster.
