Helen Holness Original Antique Watercolour - Saddle Tor, Dartmoor - Swept Gilt Frame
Original early 20th-century watercolour, "Saddle Tor, Dartmoor", by Helen Holness. Signed "Helen Holness" lower right.
A rich, atmospheric moorland scene. Purple heather and russet bracken run down to a still moorland pool, with the green slopes of the tor rising behind under a soft, misty sky and sheep grazing on the hillside.
The paint is applied with real texture and confident brushwork.
Saddle Tor stands beside Haytor, in one of the best-loved parts of Dartmoor. Watercolours of the moor like this were popular with visitors to Dartmoor in the 1920s.
The reverse carries the period label "Original Water Colour Drawing, by H. Holness, Title: Saddle Tor, Dartmoor". It matches the title and artist name printed on the gilt mount.
Presented in a handsome swept gilt frame with shell-moulded corners and centres, gold mount with printed title, glazed, with chain hanger.
Frame approx. 53cm wide x 45cm high.
Condition: frame and glass sound, some wear to the gilt. There is spotting to the mount, specks and debris under the glass, and a fine line in the sky area. The label on the back is torn at one edge.
