Aldo Cardarelli Gandhi Portrait - Signed & Dated 1976 - Listed Brazilian Artist

A genuinely captivating vintage portrait of Mahatma Gandhi by the listed Brazilian artist Aldo Cardarelli (1915–1986), signed “Cardarelli” and dated ’76.

This is not simply an attractive portrait of Gandhi. It is a piece carrying the name of an established 20th-century Brazilian painter whose life was devoted to art.

Aldo Cardarelli was a painter, portraitist and teacher with a career spanning several decades. He was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Fine Arts and the Paulista Academy of Fine Arts, taught drawing and painting at university level, exhibited extensively and received numerous artistic honours during his lifetime.

Cardarelli died in 1986, making this 1976 work a surviving piece from the artist’s own lifetime, created during the mature period of his career.

And the subject could scarcely be more iconic.

Mahatma Gandhi, seated beside his spinning wheel, is rendered in wonderfully atmospheric sepia tones, with delicate white highlights bringing his face, clothing and the wheel forward from the darker background.
