This framed picture is a popular reproduction (a chromolithograph or oleograph) depicting a detail from the Last Supper, based on a work by the German painter Adolf Schmitz.
Original: Painted by Adolf Schmitz around 1870 (the original oil painting is held, among other locations, in the Church of San Filippo Neri in Verona).
Scene: It shows a close-up of Jesus with the Apostles, including St. John resting his head on Jesus's chest, as well as St. Peter and other disciples listening to the words regarding the betrayal.
Such color reproductions—on canvas, paper, or board—were very popular in homes and churches from the late 19th to the mid-20th century.
The back of the frame bears a label from Hurst & Co., a firm that operated as an art dealer, framer, and gilder at 10 Corn Market in Belfast during the early 20th century.
