20v silvertop engine
Turbo 20V SALE
Toyota 4age 20v engine build. Ideal For Turbo
supercharger,
Parts built up at a high cost over a period of time to build a 4AGE 20v/4AGZE turbo or
supercharged engine.
For those who don't know about the possibility of
these engines, please Google 4AGE or 4AGZE
turbo build and you'l see them regularly running upwards of 300hp and some even upwards of 500hp in the US and Australasia.
The 4AGE20v in standard form runs around 160hp and can take a low amount of boost with standard compression and internals. I had this setup in my
Raw Striker (Caterham 7 style kit car) running a rotrex supercharger with 21Obhp and it was
exceptional. The rotrex was very under-utilised at this power level hence me getting the parts
together for a new build for more power. A simple pulley swap on the rotrex was going to see me at between 260- 280bhp. Sadly, before I could get round to building it, I had my eye taken by another car at very good price.
How I built up the parts and the detail.
The weak parts of the 20v 4AGE engines are the pistons and rods which are the limiting factor in making higher power. most people therefore use the pistons and rods from the already supercharged 4AGZE, which have much thicker (I have 26mm versions see photos) rods and semi forged pistons. This setup has proven as strong as most aftermarket forged pistons and rods and should deal with 400-500hp properly tuned.
I therefore imported a low mileage (38,000km)
4AGZE engine from Japan. Being one of the last 4AGZE engines it came with the more desirable higher compression ratio pistons. This still drops the CR over the 20v ones but is higher than the early 4AGZE ones, which provides better off boost performance. It had been sitting for a while, but was described as in mint condition. The idea was simply to swap the head for a 20v one and put it in
the car. The block and other parts are mostly
identical between 4AGE 16v, 20v and 4AGZE so it should have been that simple.I decided to remove the head to be sure all was well I decided to pull the pistons and check everything else over while Once apart, everything else was mint including quite a bit of the original honing marks
on the bores which was a relief. Hindsight is 20/20 and I really should have just put a 20v head on and it would have been fine!
At the same time l'd bought a 2nd had 20v head
from Cyprus. It was pressure tested and good to go.
With the engine in bits now anyway I decided to do
things properly. The 4AGZE engines only have 4 valves per cylinder, so run as an interference
engine in the 20v, with 5 valves per cylinder. Many run it this way without issue, but if the timing belt were ever to snap it will cause a much bigger bang! As the engine was destined for track use l wanted this peace of mind so took the pistons along to a race engine machine shop to have the pistons pocketed for the 5th valve. The same machine shop gave the block a light skim, honed
the bores and measured all the tolerances.
Everything was confirmed with standard specs for piston rings, bearings etc. They also found a the small bit of corrosion likely caused by water sitting in the coolant ways for some time and was far enough from the fire ring not to cause an issue. You can see the corrosion, which isn't now deep enough to catch a nail on in the overhead picture on the top left waterway.
Sadly the machinist misaligned one of the pistons when machining one of the valves and has taken a nick out of it slightly larger than the others. But I got another done This
can been seen in the pictures and the machine shop advised it was small enough not to cause an issue especially on a boosted build. But it's there as a spare
I built up a large box of parts for the build which
include:
King Racing rod bearings
King Racing main bearings
ARP head bolts
ARP rod bolts
MLS head gasket
Genuine Toyota Oil pump
Hastings pistons rings
ACL thrust washers
New freeze plugs
Toyota MR2 turbo injectors(good enough for
300hp)
Another spare 4 agze block that will need machining.
5 speed refurbed levin gearbox
And a mr2 mk1 lsd that can be fitted to the box quite easily.
Stainless steal sump bolts
I also have all parts from the 4AGZE block
including sensors, sump, water pump, bolts and
fixings. I sold the head and supercharger as they weren't needed but have everything else which will be included.
All parts have been dry stored, and the block,
crank, rods etc all lightly oiled and the smaller bits bagged.
The only things that I can think of that will be
required to be ready for the build are a set of seals
and gaskets (excluding head gasket which is
included) and a new water pump. The existing
water pump looks fine but it would be stupid not to replace it whilst building.
Id ideally like local pickup so you can be happy with everything you're buying and so I don't need to pack it all for shipping. If it ends up taking a while to sell, I do have a spare pallet and would consider shipping. I an based in West of Ireland 🇮🇪 I go to Dublin most weeks so could meet buyer on route or no to far off the n4 with payment in advance or a
suitable deposit. Interested in hearing offers on this. This is the Ingredients for a very strong and reliable turbo 20v and these parts take time to find especially in this condition.
I am currently looking to build a mr2 3sgte so might be interested in a swop.
