Pair of Very Large Reproduction Prints (4ft 6in x 3ft 9in) - Madingley Hall, Cambridge after Kip & Knyff (1707)

IF YOU LIKE THESE PRINTS, MAKE AN OFFER. IF YOU DON’T ASK YOU’LL NEVER KNOW.

A matching pair of large framed prints of the celebrated bird's-eye view "Maddingley the Seat of Sr John Cotton Bart. – Within two Miles of Cambridge". It was drawn by Leonard Knyff and engraved by Johannes Kip as plate 57 of Britannia Illustrata (London, 1707), the landmark survey of England's great country houses.

These are enlarged reproductions at a scale rarely seen. The original engraving measures about 47.5 cm (1 ft 7 in) wide; these are roughly twice that. At this size every detail of the original comes through: the Tudor hall and its formal gardens, the long central avenue and fountain, the blue-roofed farm buildings, a coach and horsemen on the drive, harvesters and a hay wagon in the fields, the Cotton family coat of arms, and Cambridge on the skyline. The full engraved title and the original artist credits are reproduced.

The view records Madingley's formal gardens as they were in 1707, before Capability Brown was brought in to remodel the grounds in 1756. Madingley Hall was begun in 1543 and has belonged to the University of Cambridge since 1948. A great pair for anyone with a Cambridge connection, and a real statement for a large living room, dining room, hallway, library or office.
