Kombucha SCOBY
Kombucha SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) is a rubbery, cellulose-based biofilm produced during the fermentation of sweet tea into kombucha. It is used as a starter culture to ferment beverages, providing beneficial microbes that turn tea into tangy, probiotic-rich kombucha. It is also known as "the mother," "mother culture," or "tea fungus".
Key Usage Examples of a SCOBY:
Kombucha Brewing: The primary use is fermenting sweetened tea to create kombucha.
Starting New Batches: A "mother" SCOBY is placed into fresh tea to create a "baby" SCOBY.
Sharing/Propagating: Extra SCOBYs (referred to as "babies") can be shared with others to start their own brews.
Edible Applications: Though rubbery, they are edible and can be used in smoothies, or dehydrated into snacks.
Sustainable Materials: The cellulose mat can be grown and dried to create eco-friendly, leather-like materials.
