ROYAL FLY AGARIC
Amanita regalis (Fr.) Michael
The royal fly agaric was first described under the somewhat unusual name Agaricus muscarius & regalis by Elias Fries in his Systema Mycologicum in 1821. In 1887, Pier Andrea Saccardo reduced it to a variety of the red fly agaric (Amanita muscaria). In 1903, Edmund Michael became the first mycologist to propose treating it as an independent species. In 1941, Jean-Édouard Gilbert once again deprived the royal fly agaric of its species status and regarded it as a variety of the red fly agaric (A. muscaria var. regalis).
Throughout the second half of the twentieth century, the well-known mycological taxonomist Rolf Singer, originally from the USSR, wavered on the matter, treating this mushroom as an independent species in some of his works and as a subspecies of the red fly agaric in others. At the very end of the last millennium, a group of Japanese scientists, using molecular analysis and comparing the royal fly agaric with other fly agarics, concluded that this mushroom should more likely be combined into a single species with the red fly agaric rather than regarded as an independent species.
Nevertheless, since 2009 both of the major mycological taxonomic databases, Index Fungorum and MycoBank, have classified the royal fly agaric as the independent species Amanita regalis. The confusion seems to have finally come to an end, and that is how we shall regard it here.
In Europe, it is known by names such as “royal fly agaric” in England, “king of the Swedish fly agarics” in Scandinavia, and “brown-red fly agaric” in the Benelux countries. In France it is called Amanite royale, while in Germany it is known as Königsfliegenpilz. All of this suggests that Europeans distinguish the royal fly agaric perfectly well from the red fly agaric. Incidentally, in 2000 the German Mycological Society selected the royal fly agaric as “Mushroom of the Year,” making it, in a sense, the “mushroom of the millennium” as well.
The cap is 5–10 (up to 25) cm in diameter. At first it is spherical, with the margin pressed against the stem and densely covered with white or yellowish warts. Later it becomes convex and then flat, sometimes with a raised, striated margin, and bears numerous, though occasionally sparse, whitish or yellowish warty flakes, remnants of the universal veil, on a yellow-ochre, yellow-brown, or ochre-brown background that is darker in the centre.
The gills are frequent, broad, white, becoming yellowish or creamy-yellow with age. The flesh is thick, brittle, white, and without any distinctive smell. Beneath the cap skin, the flesh is an attractive golden-yellow colour.
The stem measures 8–12 (up to 25) × 1–3 cm. At first it is bulbous, later becoming more or less cylindrical, with a club-shaped thickening at the base. It is covered with a whitish, felt-like coating, beneath which it is brownish-ochre, sometimes with scales in the lower part. The stem is solid when young and becomes hollow with age. It bears a ring. The ring is thin, hanging, smooth or faintly striated, often torn into several sections, and is white with a yellowish or brownish edge. The volva is fused to the stem, warty, and represented by two or three yellowish rings of warts. Neither the stem nor the ring is ever pure white; both always have a more or less pronounced yellowish tinge.
The royal fly agaric can easily be distinguished from the red fly agaric by the complete absence of even the slightest trace of red in the cap. Its colouring consists exclusively of white, yellow, and brown shades. In addition, clearly visible yellow flakes occur on the stem, something not seen in the red fly agaric.
If the mushroom develops with a pale, inconspicuous yellowish-brown cap, it can be confused with the edible blusher (Amanita rubescens), which is easily distinguished by the reddening of its flesh when cut. The panther cap (Amanita pantherina) has a similar cap colour, but in that species the flesh beneath the cap skin is white rather than yellow, and the volva at the base of the stem is cup-shaped with a clearly defined free rim.
Of all its habitats, the royal fly agaric prefers European mountain forests, both deciduous and coniferous. In Europe it is distributed mainly in the northern and eastern regions, is rare in the west, and is completely unknown in the south. Outside Europe, including the Baltic countries and Russia, it has also been recorded in Korea and Alaska.
The royal fly agaric is poisonous. A well-documented case of poisoning is known from Finland, where in 1979 three enthusiastic Finnish mushroom pickers decided that it was a special northern form of the parasol mushroom (Macrolepiota procera). The first symptoms appeared approximately two hours after they had eaten the “parasols.” These symptoms were mainly gastrointestinal and included severe vomiting and diarrhoea.
After this, two of the Finns developed intense nervous excitement and began to hallucinate. The third apparently could only envy them. All three recovered within twenty-four hours without any fatal consequences for the liver, kidneys, or central nervous system.
Since the “parasols” had first been boiled and the cooking water discarded, it can be concluded that the toxins and hallucinogenic substances of the royal fly agaric, unlike the toxins of the red fly agaric, which are readily removed by boiling, are not eliminated by heat treatment.
Chemical analysis showed that this fly agaric contains the traditional ibotenic acid and muscimol, that is, the same toxins and hallucinogens as the ordinary red fly agaric. However, neither muscarine, a toxin traditionally associated with fly agarics, nor tryptophan or its derivatives were detected in the royal fly agaric, which makes it truly “royal.” :)
Like the slender pig mushroom, Amanita regalis has a strong ability to accumulate salts of heavy metals, especially vanadium. This property was first discovered in fly agarics in 1939 in Amanita muscaria. Field studies of Scandinavian mushrooms have shown vanadium concentrations ranging from 38 to 169 mg per kilogram of dried mushrooms, equivalent to approximately 119 mg/kg of fresh weight.
That is a very large amount. For comparison, the average vanadium content in the overwhelming majority of other fungi examined for this metal is only about 2 mg/kg.
Why does the royal fly agaric need so much vanadium? It is unclear.
