Vintage Irish Mahogany Table-Top Revolving Bookcase by The Kilkenny Woodworkers
A rarely seen table-top revolving (rotating) bookcase, made in Ireland by The Kilkenny Woodworkers, early 20th century. The original maker’s plaque is still fitted underneath, marked “Manufactured by The Kilkenny Woodworkers” with the Irish “Déanta i nÉirinn” (Made in Ireland) and numbered 024.
Made in mahogany, it has a shaped serpentine top, slatted sides with brass stud detailing, and a scalloped base on an X-shaped foot. It rotates on a central pivot and has four compartments.
Dimensions: Shelf Height 23 cm, width 30 cm, depth 30 cm
Condition: Good vintage condition and in working order. It rotates as it should. There is a fine split in the top surface and some light surface scratches and wear to the edge, as shown in the photos.
The Kilkenny Woodworkers grew out of Kilkenny’s Technical School, where young men were learning woodwork and carving around 1905. They formed a co-operative to revive a local furniture industry, with Captain Otway Cuffe helping organise them into a business. They started in a workshop off Patrick Street, moved in 1906 to a factory at Talbot’s Inch, and opened a shop in Dublin, first on Nassau Street and later on Grafton Street. Their commissions included seating for St Canice’s Cathedral and bookcases for St Kieran’s College library and the Royal Dublin Society. Their last surviving shopfront is on High Street, Kilkenny, now Murphy Jewellers.
