Vintage Drinking Trough Table Lamp
These days, cattle water troughs are made from plastic and fabricated from sheet metal, traditionally, like most farm equipment of the mid-20th century they would have been cast and this, I have lovingly made from a surviving cast drinking trough which my grandfather and father would have used on our farm.
Unlike today’s trough, this would have refilled with water as the animals pressed the lever with their nose while drinking from it, a fantastic piece of engineering history from it’s day.
This particular trough was made by Fred Kidd and Sons Engineering from Stockton-on-Tees in the UK, set up in 1939. Sadly, unlike their fine engineering work, the business closed down in 1985, giving some indication to the age of this piece which is believed to have been bought in Atkins Farm Machinery in Cork, Ireland in the 1950s.
Having now repurposed it into a lamp, I have mounted it on a teak base. In keeping with upcycling and sustainability, this piece of teak was once the mantelpiece in my own house which was put in place in 1980 and only recently removed during a renovation.
Please note this is a 70 year old piece of metal used on a farm, bumps, scrapes, dents and pitting are a part of its age and character
The lamp uses E27 Bulbs, allowing a wide variety of bulb options to suit your tastes.
Uses a 3-pin plug (as standard in Ireland and the UK) however, the buyer can easily change to EU plug.
