Antique Victorian Quality Solid Mahogany Sutherland Table
A truly beautiful item in lovely condition. There are some age related marks as shown. Please see the last photo for measurements.
This was professionally restored 20 years ago.
Compact drop-leaf table featuring a narrow center section and two deep leaves that hang down almost to the floor when closed.
It utilises a specialised gate-leg framework, where the slender, turned inner legs swing outward like a gate to support the leaves when raised.
The stationary center structure features two baluster-turned pillars connected by a low central stretcher for stability, resting on standard ceramic or brass furniture casters (wheels) for easy mobility.
Named after the Duchess of Sutherland in the 1820s, these space-saving accent pieces became highly popular throughout the 19th-century Victorian era for holding tea services or playing games in smaller sitting rooms.
