Under the leadership of Sir Pelham Warner England twice brought back the Ashes from Australia and his thirteen years' captaincy of Middlesex culminated with the winning of the county championship in 1920, since when it has only once come South to Middlesex again, in 1921. He has served on the Committee and Cricket Sub-Committee of the M.C.C. over a period of nearly forty years, was seven times Chairman of the Selection Committee for Test Matches in England and went to Australia as one of the Managers of the 1932-33 Test Team. For twelve years he was cricket correspondent of the "Morning Post" and since 1921 has been Editor of "The Cricketer." Indeed, for a very considerable time he has occupied a key position in English cricket and his knowledge of the game and its players is unrivalled.
In "Cricket Between Two Wars" he gives a history of the cricketing events of the twenties and thirties. This history, which has been published serially in "The Cricketer," starts in 1921 when the game was at a low ebb and ends in 1939 when the prestige of English cricket had been fully restored. It includes detailed accounts of all the outstanding matches played during those years; it outlines the contributions of particular great individuals of the game; it expresses the views and opinions of a great expert on contentious problems such as body-line bowling and innovations like the eight-ball over; it is, in addition, a most entertaining document. Sir Pelham's shrewd and genial personality reveals itself on every page. His anecdotes about the players bring to life the human personalities behind the famous figures and his descriptions of amusing incidents and experiences make vivid reading.
