Original antique book published in London in 1850: The Pictorial Gallery of English Race Horses by George Tattersall

Published by Henry G. Bohn, York Street, Covent Garden, London

A very attractive and highly illustrated Victorian-era book devoted to English horse racing and some of the most famous racehorses of the period.

The book contains portraits and histories of winners of the Derby, Oaks and St Leger Stakes, together with material on the history of British horse racing.

Most importantly, this copy is complete with all 90 illustrations / engravings, many of them full-page plates, after works by well-known sporting artists including J. F. Herring, Abraham Cooper, Henry Alken, C. Hancock and Harry Hall.
Published in 1850, making it over 175 years old.

The book is in good antique condition for its age. The original red binding shows some age-related wear, particularly around the spine and covers, and there is some light age spotting / foxing internally.

A very interesting piece for a collector of: antique books, horse racing memorabilia, equestrian history, Victorian sporting art or engravings.

Complete examples with all 90 plates are increasingly difficult to find.
