just had a look , i had an LC III but not any more. But you should have a go at recapping the psu - loads of vids on utube showing how to do it.

hey emmetorior - think i have a good LC III - would love to fix this apple ii - fancy an exchange ? - your machines problem is 99.9999% blown rifa caps in the psu ..... have a look at some vids on youtube , you can most likely fix it yourself ..... just have to see this machine working again !! - cheers

Yeah... I experienced that smoke with the first one of these I had.

I had 4... one was stolen by some guys looking for "scrap metal".. The second started smoking, but I fixed it up with my cousin and some beers.

This non working one is the third, and the fourth is working, but I'm not selling yet! I might hang onto it!!

Actually, I'm captivated by the pizza boxes.. I think that might be my next one to buy... maybe a souped up LCIII or 475... or maybe a 6100.

I worked in tech support as a youngfella, and we had a whole room full of un-repairable 7200s, due to some identity chip in them which would brick the whole system.

@keanebg1: hm.. yeah... I mean, I've done it before but I'm not an expert, but when I did it to another Apple II, none of the other components seemed to be damaged in any way.
I still have a working one also, it beeps and starts up fine, but again - it still needs recapping. And a working monitor that is working with noisy screen pots... and without any cards.
So if I sell the working ones, they will still need Rifa updates.

However, the computer advertised here doesn't start up, the monitor doesn't either, and the computer has a swirly ultrasonic ring sound from the psu.. I love these machines but I've had to keep them in storage so I'm only selling for.. sort of.. family reasons.

When I have the money, I'm gonna buy back a complete working one with all the cards and networking and so on.

done a few of these - yep , the board should be fine - its the rifa's in the power supply that have to be replaced - even if the machine powers up and works those rifa's have to be changed ASAP as they will eventually go ..... and when they do its usually with a big cloud of smoke and a terrible stench - when the rifa's go they make one god awful mess inside the psu

The common trope of recapping all is not applicable to most 80s computers and only really impacts 90s SMD Caps in Amiga 600/1200, Macintosh Classic, Sega Game Gear etc.... The surface-mount caps from this specific window leak corrosive fluid that eats boards. The only thing to recap might be Rifa Y2/X2 capacitors or other caps in the PSU, theres nothing to recap on the main board, the Caps in it are higher quality than whats available today.

To be fair advertising a retro computer as 'untouched' or not molested by anymore is very appealing... This looks to be a fantastic machine...

@keanebg1 these machines usually just get recapped and are fine after, but I dont have the time to fix them, but engineers and collectors have the skill. So they aren't broken beyond repair ie for parts, they just need capacitor change
