12.7mm is 0.5 inches, so this held ammo for the "50 cal" machine gun. The symbol of 2 dots, joined by a bar, means the ammo was linked, or on a belt. The belt type is written as "M9". As far as I can tell, every 5 round was a tracer round.

Hi - I think this is a steel M2A1 ammunition box for .50 Cal (12.7mm) ammo. It was introduced during the 1950s and I think your one is far more recent/ It's a nice can in good condition all the same, and 20 quid is a good price, but it's not, unfortunately, WW2.
