Marshal Ferdinand Foch commemorated the Irish who fought.
The Irish who died in the first World War had an “unconquerable spirit” that “has placed them among the world’s greatest soldiers”, wrote the allied forces commander in chief during the first World War, Marshal Ferdinand Foch in 1928. 1928.
He wrote a letter of tribute which was published in The Irish Times to mark the 10th anniversary of the Armistice in 1928 to ‘heroic’ Irish soldiers who died in the war. The words are carved in stone at the bottom of the Franco-Irish memorial which was unveiled at Glasnevin cemetery in 2016.
