VW (Voluntary Worker) - a WW1 period worker's badge (1915-1916)

For sale is an official WW1 (First World War) Voluntary Worker's badge that was worn to identify the wearer as doing essential war work. The work could be of any type considered essential to the war effort and the wearer would show they were "doing their bit" These badges carried a control number that linked the badge to the wearer, to whom it was issued and presumably there was a register for the issue of these badges. The issue of these types of badges declined after conscription was introduced in 1916. Most VW badges were issued to women as these were non-combatants and came forward in great numbers to take up work out of the home. The convention was that women wore badges with a pin fitting and men with those having a buttonhole fitting. Earlier badges issued in 1914 were enamelled.

There were many other types of voluntary worker badges issued for different types of war work such as; munitions, Voluntary Aid Detatchment (Red Cross & nursing), Home Front charities (a huge range of work), volunteer training corps, public transport, etc.
