@Shelnua: Thanks. I spend more time on the tension than cleaning/oiling seeking a perfectly straight stitch which I have managed on only 2/5 201s!
It is essential to use the same weight and brand of thread top and bottom. Gutermann's (made in in Germany) is the best that I have tried.

Thank you very much for your prompt and helpful response. The problem was that the stitches on the wrong side of work were tangled in places. I spent a couple of hours this evening tightening and loosening the tension wheel and lo and behold I think the problem is solved!!! Trial and error. The setting works on cotton and on tweed so fingers crossed.

@Shelnua: Hi, my experience is limited to restoring vintage cast iron machines. Yours is aluminium but the mechanisms are identical as far as I know.
If you can tell me what the specific issue is with the machine, I can have a look at it for you. I am in Templeogue.
I generally strip all the parts (except the gears), cleaned and oil everything.
I don't have parts so if any are missing/damaged I would be unable to help you.
