Vintage Hyotokko Japanese Face Mask

The word Hyotokko is broken down in english in to fire and man.The figure is worshipped in parts of Northen Japan as the God of fire.The mask is used in theatrical circles and the character often blows fire through a bamboo pipe..hence the puckered mouth.This mask is in lovely condition..probably late 70's/early 80s..is of paper mache construction with a flocked front and an inner foil..there is an inner wooden peg to be held in the wearer's mouth.The theatrical veil would traditional be tied around the head in a circular movement. These pieces seldom come up for sale on these shores and this is a very nice example..it has inner dimensions of 8x6 inches and it's longest and widest point.Registered post is available for an additional five euro.Thanks for looking please check out my other ads.
