Vintage An Garda Siochana Wooden Baton. Truncheon with Leather Strap. 1960-1980s
Own a piece of Irish history.
Genuine vintage wooden ceremonial / historic display piece.
This is a beautiful piece of Irish social history and local memorabilia, featuring the classic turned hardwood handle and its original thick leather wrist strap held firmly by the metal collar ring.
This was the standard 18-inch (approx. 45cm) defensive pattern carried daily by ordinary, uniformed, unarmed GardaĆ in their specialized long trousers pocket. It was specifically designed to balance weight and portability so it wouldn't be too heavy to carry on foot beats.
The wood has a fantastic deep aged patina and the piece is structurally solid. Ideal for anyone collecting Irish militaria, historical police uniform items, or looking for a unique historical display object.
Wooden truncheons were the primary defensive tool for Irish police for generations, dating all the way back to the foundation of the state in 1922. However, they were completely phased out starting in 2006.
