For sale is a UKCTA (United Kingdom Commercial Travellers Association) medal issued on behalf of the UKCTA's Samaratian Fund Society. This vintage medal is in lovely condition and complete with its original ribbon.
The UKCTA was a professional trades' association established 1883 for the benefit of commercial travelling salesmen. They were the largest association for commercial travellers, organised into branches across the UK as well as Ireland. The UKCTA later dropped the word ‘Kingdom’ from its title and became known as the United Commercial Travellers’ Association (UCTA). In 1976 they UCTA ceased as an independent trades' association when they merged with the 'The Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs' (ASTMS).
As a professional association, they would have provided insurance cover, welfare services and legal assistance to members and their families as well as assistance with job placements. The UKCTA also placed great emphasis on the professionalism of their membership in order to distance them from the more dubious practises of ‘door-to-door-salesmen’. It was in the interests of the UKCTA and their members to see that the legitimacy of the profession was upheld.
I believe these medals were awarded to those who donated above a certain amount to the UKCTA's Samaritan Fund Society. The society looked after the welfare and other interesetst of UKCTA members and their families in need of financial or other assistance. I've been unable to find out anything the Walter J. Lovell Trophy and if anyone can provide information, I'd be grateful to hear from you.
