Still trying to downsize following our house move to a smaller property. I’ve quite a few eclectic pieces which will be going as they are not really part of my main collections but were just items that I was attracted to. They still bring me joy, but more stuff still needs to go!!!

For Sale here is a Stunning Pair of High Quality Vintage Mid Century Handmade Marquetry Panels Featuring a Land and Seascape Scenes from the Amalfi Coast, By A. Cuomo, Sorrento

These are fabulous examples of the almost lost art of Marquetry - also spelled as marqueterie, which is the art and craft of applying pieces of different wood veneers to a structure to form decorative patterns or designs. The technique may be applied to case furniture or even seat furniture, to decorative small objects with smooth, veneerable surfaces or to freestanding pictorial panels appreciated in their own right as works of art.

I have a great appreciation for this almost lost skill, as both my father and grandfather were skilled in the craft of marquetry, and I have grown up visiting my Grandad’s house where his panels decorated the walls.

These panels are not by either of them, but they evoked so many memories, when I found them, I had to make the purchase.

They were also appealing to me because of the subject matter. I don’t know exactly where the scenes are taken from, but given that A.Cuomo is based in Sorrento, I am presuming the Amalfi Coast or elsewhere in the Mediterranean.

These were quite the gift or souvenir to bring back from travels to Italy during the 50’s and 60’s, when not so many people had the chance for foreign holidays.

They are very fine examples of marquetry, where each type of wood veneer has been chosen and cut with great care and attention, leaving no gaps, and producing such a realistic scene. Just look at the cliffs and houses, where the grain in the wood mimics perfectly the striations in the rock formations.

The pieces are lacquered very evenly, and the reverses have hooks for hanging.

They are both in excellent vintage condition with no crazing to the lacquered surface or lifting of the veneer. They measure 9 inches/ 23cm by 7 inches/ 18cm.

Priced and selling as a pair, and I would like to keep them together. I can consider separating them, but they would work out more expensive that way.
