For sale is a finely made 1974 Steward's medal issued as a Masonic fund-raiser for the Royal Masonic Institution Senior School at Bushey in Hertfordshire. This medal shows the hearldic arms of the County of Hertfordshire, incorporating the blue wavy line (waves) and a stag.

The Royal Masonic Institution for Boys (RMIB) was a charitable boy’s school established in 1798 for the “sons of deceased and distressed Freemasons”. By the 1950s the school's intake of pupils was in decline and this decline continued throughout the 1960s until the boy's junior school closed in 1970 and the boy's senior school closed in 1977. A similar institution for girls had already been established in 1788, eventually becoming the Royal Masonic School for Girls which continues to thrive as an independent fee-paying school at Rickmansworth.

Steward medals were issued annually as an award for donating so much to the RMIB and each year a different Masonic Province arms was featured on the medals. The 1974 Steward's medal features the arms representing the Masonic Province of Hertfordshire.

Size: about 1 3/8" width x 3 1/8" including the ribbon (36mm x 84mm).
Material(s): brass metal with 1 enamel.
Finish: gilt.
Fitting: bale & suspension ring.
Imprint: none. But probably made by Toye & Company Ltd of London.
Approximate age: 1974
